Peter Musila

Marine Biologist

I am a marine conservation biologist, i joined ARK in November 2021 and i am  currently  working as programme coordinator at ARK marine Programme. My background is Bachelor of Science in coastal and marine resource management with over 3 years’ experience working in marine conservation.
With supervision from Scientists, my role is multifaceted with time spent meeting government officials, collaborating with other national research groups, meeting with community members and marine stakeholders and collecting and analysing a wide variety of data about marine ecology.

This role also involves fundraising, administration and finance of the marine projects at the field-study centre in Watamu and supervision of volunteers, students and associate researchers working within the programme.

My fascination with wildlife and love for nature started at a young age. I also really enjoy swimming and my passion for being underwater has led me to exploring the oceans. I first came to the coast for my undergraduate degree in marine biology, from Kenyatta university (2015-2020) where I got an amazing opportunity to do my school project in a coral restoration project and conduct my first independent research. That is where I made my first SCUBA dive on a coral reef  and it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen!. Since then, I have not turned back

Our organization integrates values and faith into the life of the community and motivates much of our work, but remains committed to collaboration with the local community, guests, and staff who might be motivated by other values. The goal is to have an inclusive community that seeks to work with all who are committed to caring for this beautiful place. This means that the work is not just a day job, but a way of life that integrates holistically all aspects of my daily life. Each day may be very different, but working together as part of a community seeking the flourishing of our local place has been an exciting adventure. My most enjoyable moments are when I’m underwater recording data for species diversity or mapping habitats for these marvellous creations
